The Skin Myth Clinic by Qurez : Deeper skin tones do not require sunscreen.

Myth: Deeper skin tones do not require sunscreen.

This is one of the most common and most misunderstood sunscreen myths.

Deep skin tone does have more melanin (the pigment responsible for skin color), and melanin does offer some natural protection against UV rays from the sun. It can reduce some amount of sun exposure, which is why deeper skin tone may not show redness or sunburn as quickly.

But lower visible sunburn does not mean lower sun damage.

That is where the myth begins.

Most people associate sun damage only with burning, peeling, or redness. But in deeper and Indian skin tones, photodamage (sun damage) is often present differently.

It may show up as:

1. Tanning that deepens quickly.

2.Β  Uneven tone.

3.Β  Dullness.

4.Β  Melasma aggravation (sun-triggered darkening of patches)

5.Β  Acne marks becoming darker.

6.Β  Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark marks left after acne or irritation)

7. Pigmentation that takes months to fade.

From a β€œSkincare Science” perspective, this makes sunscreen even more relevant.

Sun exposure affects the skin through different parts of light and rays, and each one impacts the skin differently.

UVB rays mainly affect the upper layers of the skin. They are the rays most commonly associated with visible sunburn, redness, irritation, and direct skin-cell damage.Β

This is why many people judge sun damage by one simple question: β€œDid my skin burn?”

But sunburn is only the most visible form of sun damage.

UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin. They may not always cause immediate redness, but they can still trigger deeper stress inside the skin. Over time, this can contribute to tanning, collagen breakdown, pigmentation, uneven tone, and early signs of photoageing caused by sun exposure.

So, even when deeper skin tone does not visibly burn, UVA-related damage may still be happening beneath the surface.

And then there is visible light, which includes the blue-light range. Visible light is different from UVA and UVB, but it is especially relevant for Indian and melanin-rich skin tones because it can contribute to pigmentation concerns. In skin that is already prone to tanning, melasma, acne marks, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, visible light can make dark patches look deeper and take longer to fade.

This is why β€œI do not burn” should not be confused with β€œI am protected.”

For deeper skin tones, sunscreen is not about changing the skin tone. It is about protecting the skin tone you already have. It is about reducing tanning, pigmentation triggers, uneven tone, and photoageing caused by sun damage.

The real question is not:

β€œDoes deeper skin tone burn easily?”

The better question is:

β€œIs deeper skin tone protected from UVB, UVA, visible light, pigmentation triggers, and long-term sun damage?”

That is why broad-spectrum sunscreen matters across every skin tone.

But there is one real problem: many sunscreens are not made with darker skin tones in mind.

Therefore at Qurez, we craft sunscreens for real Indian skin tones: from light to medium and medium to deeper tones. Our tinted variants are designed to blend seamlessly, without a white cast or grey undertone.

But β€œthe tint” is not just for cosmetic coverage.

A good tinted sunscreen is not simply a sunscreen with makeup-like colour added to it. The tint can have a functional role when it comes from mineral pigments like iron oxides.

In Qurez’s tinted sunscreens, the tint comes from iron oxides, including red and yellow iron oxides. These pigments help the sunscreen blend better with Indian skin tones, reduce white cast, and avoid the grey finish many sunscreens leave behind. But more importantly, iron oxides also help support protection against visible light, including the blue-light range.

So the tint is not just for colour correction.

It is not just for cosmetic coverage.

It is a functional part of the sunscreen’s protection story.

We at Qurez believe that every skin tone deserves protection that feels refined, comfortable, and truly wearable.
